Analysts expect M4 Mac to drive demand for premium PCs in the short term

MacBook Pros to be updated with M4

JP Morgan reports disappointing Q3 2024 PC and Mac shipments, but demand for so-called AI PCs like Apple's upcoming M4 Macs could help recovery in 2025.

Apple’s Mac lineup saw little change in 2024, save for the M3 MacBook Air refresh in March. That led to a slowdown in demand, but not a dramatic one for Macs across quarters.

The overall PC market saw shipments decline below seasonal trends, according to data from JP Morgan in a report seen by AppleInsider. Shipments in Q3 2024 were down 2% year over year, while shipments grew 6% quarter over quarter — quarterly gains are typically around 11%.

Demand is reportedly focused on entry-level models during the back-to-school season and a weaker economy, but the outlook is positive due to expected demand for computers with AI features. Moderate growth is expected in 2025, with mid-single-digit increases year over year.

Apple is expected to release updated M4-based Macs, such as a refreshed MacBook Pro and a rumored mini Mac mini. All M-series Macs are touted as being built for AI and will compete with Copilot+ computers in the PC market.

The report expects that the adoption of AI-powered PCs could drive demand in 2026. AI-powered PCs are expected to become “ubiquitous” by 2030.

The impact of the PC market slowdown has slightly impacted Apple’s share, dropping it from 8.8% to 7.8% quarter-on-quarter. Apple’s year-over-year market share decline is 2.2%.

Apple is rumored to unveil the M4 Mac lineup in late October, with first shipments expected in early November. New Macs before the holiday season could help spur demand and boost Apple's market share in 2025.
