MKBHD Shares a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Apple's iPhone Durability Test [Video]

Have you ever wondered how Apple tests its iPhones for dust, water, drop resistance and more? Apple invited MKBHD to check out its dedicated labs with dedicated durability testing machines, as well as speak with Apple's head of hardware, John Ternus. Check out the breathtaking footage from Apple's lab to see how it all works.

MKBHD shared a few short videos on X this morning showing off the neat operation of the device . -Scenes show Apple testing its IP (dust/water) ratings, drop resistance, vibration resistance, and more.

In typical Apple fashion, the labs have extremely detailed machines to thoroughly test every metric .

For example, one water penetration test uses 13 streams of water that rotate almost 360 degrees, hitting the iPhone from all sides.

MKBHD notes that there is an entire room dedicated to only for water/dust ingress. For water only, Apple tests four levels:

  • Simulated drip tray
  • Low-pressure steady stream
  • High-pressure “firehose” stream »
  • Locks your phone underwater plus extra pressure to simulate depth for a long time

Another interesting news – Apple sometimes tests the durability of up to 10,000+ pre-release iPhones .

The behind-the-scenes footage also shows a drop test system, a vibration test system, and a short interview with Apple representatives. John Ternus discusses repairability, durability testing and more.
