Future emojis may include eye bags and a shovel.

New emoticons in Unicode 16

The Unicode Consortium has unveiled a proposal for Unicode 16 that includes seven new emoji characters, such as like a harp, a shovel, a fingerprint and a face with bags under the eyes.

The period from concept to implementation of an emoji is long, and the Unicode Consortium has revealed what may come next. After the beta testing period determines what will be included in the final version, companies like Apple will have to create their own versions of each new emoji.

According to a Unicode 16 release post first spotted by MacRumors, the Unicode update will include new emoji. Although the proposed emoji are not yet finalized, they will likely be released after the beta period ends on July 2.

Seven new emoticons are offered.

The images included in the proposal are not the final version and are not what will appear on various operating systems. Once the emoji are approved, Apple, Google and other companies will be able to create their own artistic interpretation of each emoji.

Emoji have become an important part of Apple's launch strategy. The company often includes new emojis in a major mid-cycle update to encourage holdouts to switch to the update.

Even though emoticons are cartoonish drawings, they can cause a lot of controversy. One child petitioned for the nerd emoji to be removed, a false controversy surrounded the clown emoji, and an autocorrect error caused a stir over the Palestinian flag.

Even though Unicode 16 and the new emoji are scheduled for release in July, Apple likely won't implement it until 2025. They may be included in a late release of iOS 18 or as part of iOS 19.
