Siri already has AI elements, but it can be better

Apple Digital Assistant Siri is getting a major update in the near future, including a huge number of changes in the field of generative artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Siri used to be considered a great introduction to the iPhone and the Apple ecosystem. The digital assistant's shine has certainly dimmed over the years, and Google Assistant has proven to be a very capable competitor.
With the recent advent of ChatGPT and other Large Language Model (LLM) AI initiatives, the AI gold rush has begun. With Siri seemingly remaining unchanged and being passed over by competitors, Apple is now expected to make significant changes to its smart feature.
Executives including Craig Federighi and John Giannandrea spent weeks reviewing ChatGPT in 2023, according to the New York Times. At the time, sources said ChatGPT made Siri look outdated.
The discovery led Apple to reorganize its own artificial intelligence projects to try to catch up.
Apple is expected to show off what it has been working on at WWDC on June 10th. This is expected to include a more conversational and versatile Siri, as well as a generative AI system that allows for chatting. .
Three people familiar with the work say Siri will be better at tasks it can already do, such as setting appointments and summarizing text messages. This is an attempt to stand out from ChatGPT's creative vision and bring more value to users.
Apple also plans to use on-device processing as a major benefit for customers, as it will be more private than sending data to the cloud.
AI in development
We talked about — and exclusively hacking — Apple's efforts in this area have been for some time.
At the moment, the history of Apple's public work in the field of artificial intelligence consists of several key projects. This includes the multi-modal LLM “Ferret”, released in October, which can recognize and respond to queries affecting image areas.
The subsequent project, Ferret-UI, used the same concept to handle complex user interfaces. This allows the LLM to understand what is happening in the application, potentially explain information to the user, or run other tasks.
There has also been a lot of discussion about Ajax, LLM, which could cover many different functions that Siri could theoretically do. For example, summarizing text to analyze whether contacts are engaged and providing Spotlight with smarter results.
One of the features of Ajax is that while complex requests may require server-side processing, it is still capable of generating basic text responses on the device.
To emphasize the seriousness of Apple's attention to artificial intelligence, the company has taken the path of making its work as legal as possible.
While competitors took the path of collecting data from publicly available sources, causing criticism, Apple thought differently. Instead, it offered publishers millions of dollars for access to news archives while maintaining its own artificial intelligence training.
However, it remains to be seen how effective the year of introduction of artificial intelligence for Siri was. We won't truly know until we try it out on our own devices in the coming months.
