Apple said it has resumed discussions about integrating OpenAI into iOS 18

The report says Apple is still considering a wide range of AI suppliers for iOS 18, and OpenAi is again in talks with the iPhone maker.

There wasn't much else discussed in Friday's Bloomberg report. The key point is that OpenAI discussions have resumed or are perhaps somehow ongoing for potential inclusion in iOS 18. Previous rumors made it clear that Apple was in talks with OpenAI. A report on Friday said the technology could be coming to iOS 18 in the form of a chatbot. It's unclear whether this will complement Siri or replace it.

If the report is correct, OpenAI is not the only generative technology Apple is considering integrating. Rumors suggest that Apple is in talks with Google to somehow give iOS 18 users access to Gemini.

Another but similar rumor suggests that Apple is working on creating an AI App Store. Customers could go to the App Store and pay for access to premium AI features such as Gemini search or other AI tools provided by Google.

All of these rumors may be separate, but they seem to be related to Apple's overall strategy. The company clearly plans to offer smaller models for mobile devices while outsourcing LLM to larger existing companies like Google.

As with any rumors about Apple's artificial intelligence plans, it's best to take them with a grain of salt. Six years ago, Apple hired artificial intelligence and search maven John Giannandrea. And the hire came after eight years at Google developing machine learning for the search engine giant.

It seems unlikely that the senior executive's efforts will result in Apple licensing competing technology rather than providing some of its own. In fact, the company has done a lot for the AI research community over the past few years, with the latest being a series of models designed to run on a device rather than a server farm.

Apple will reveal its artificial intelligence strategy at WWDC on June 10.
