iOS 17

Apple has moved into the second round of developer beta testing, releasing the latest version of iOS 17.5, including the Apple Web Distribution system.

Developers participating in Apple's beta program can receive new builds through any Apple Developer Center or directly by updating their iPhone or iPad that is already running beta versions through the Settings app. Public betas usually appear shortly after developer versions, and public participants can sign up on Apple's beta testing program website.

The second beta versions for iOS 17.5, iPadOS 17.5, tvOS 17.5, watchOS 10.5 and macOS Sonoma 14.5 will follow the first versions, which appeared on April 2.

The new second beta versions of iOS and iPadOS 17.5 have a build number. 21F5058e, replacing the first, 21F5048f, and the second build of tvOS 17.5 and HomePod Software 17.5 has build number 21L5553e compared to the first build number 21L5543d.

The second developer beta build of watchOS 10.5 is numbered 21T5555d, replacing 21T5545f, and the second developer build of macOS Sonoma 14.5 is numbered 23F5059e, replacing the first, 23F5049.

In addition to macOS Sonoma, Apple also released a second update candidate for macOS Ventura 13.6.7, build number 22G711, and another build for macOS Monterey 12.7.5, build number 21H1211.

New in the second beta of iOS 17.5 is Apple's web distribution system, designed to allow authorized developers to distribute their iOS apps to iPhones in the EU directly through a developer-owned website rather than through a storefront. store. Apple provides developers with access to APIs for online distribution, system functionality integration, backup and recovery, and other features.

Apps offered via web distribution must meet the same notarization requirements as other iOS apps, and the domain from which they are installed is registered with App Store Connect.

Apple also included a fix for an unexpected bug in iOS 1.4.1 that caused the keyboard's automatic suggestions to display the Palestinian flag when users typed “Jerusalem” in iMessage. After the change, the flag no longer appears in the suggestions window.

First beta version for iOS 17.5 links included to codes allowing sideloading of apps in the European Union following the passage of the Digital Markets Act. This included links to web distribution code.

The code for the first beta version of the anti-harassment extension for AirTags also included mentions.

There were relatively few user-visible changes in the beta, but there were changes to the Podcasts widget and changes to payment information in Settings.

AppleInsider and Apple strongly advise users not to install test operating systems or other beta or RC software on “mission-critical” or essential devices, as there is a small chance of problems occurring that could result in data loss. Instead, testers should use secondary or non-essential equipment and ensure that they have sufficient backups of critical data at all times.
