How to Make the Most of Your Mac's Trackpad

The Mac trackpad is great, but it could be better.

Are you one of many whether you're the MacBook user of the world or simply prefer the Magic Trackpad over a traditional mouse, there are many ways to make the trackpad experience on your Mac even better.

One of the best features of any Apple device is multi-touch. On a MacBook or Magic Trackpad, multi-touch can be used to speed up and simplify all sorts of everyday Mac uses. However, there are a few ways to customize your Mac's trackpad to get the most out of its multi-touch capabilities.

Changing trackpad settings in system settings

The easiest way to customize your Mac's trackpad is, of course, through the macOS system settings. It only takes a few clicks to find your way to the correct settings menu.

The built-in macOS trackpad settings offer a wide range of settings.

  1. Open System Preferences.

  2. Find or tap Trackpad.

Once you go to the trackpad settings menu, you'll see a number of options to change how the trackpad behaves. These settings include sensitivity, haptic feedback, scroll direction, and tap and click capabilities, as well as a list of additional multi-touch gestures, including:

  • Zoom in and out
  • Smart zoom
  • Rotate
  • Flip between pages
  • Switch between full-screen apps
  • Open Action Center
  • Open Mission Control
  • Opening App Expose
  • Opening Launcher
  • Desktop Display

Only with these settings you can add to the trackpad many additional utilities. However, you don't have to stop at the settings offered in System Preferences.

Customizing-your-trackpad-with-third-party-apps

There are several third-party apps that let you do more with your Mac's trackpad, but by far the best one is BetterTouchTool. BTT is a paid app that allows you to add a range of custom inputs to your Mac's trackpad, as well as modify other input devices such as the MacBook Pro's Touch Bar.

BetterTouchTool offers a variety of customization options for users who want to get even more out of their trackpad.

Customizing inputs in BTT is as easy as choosing a gesture , and then choose the action that corresponds to that gesture. You can even create your own gestures in BTT. With these custom inputs you can really add a whole new level of customization to your trackpad.

A BTT license starts at $10, but a generous 45-day trial is offered for those who want to try out the app before committing to a purchase.

By using customizations on your Mac's built-in trackpad, as well as third-party apps like BTT, you can make your Mac's already useful trackpad more effective.
