New bug in macOS Sonoma 14.4 breaks iCloud Drive file versions

List of problems in macOS Sonoma 14.4 continues to grow: a new bug has been discovered that causes saved versions of files stored on iCloud Drive to be erased.
Many applications offer the ability to save earlier versions of files, allowing users to revert a document to a previous state. Users who save their documents to iCloud Drive may find that macOS Sonoma 14.4 may break this feature.
In a post Monday, Eclectic Light warned that macOS Sonoma 14.4 users who save files to iCloud Drive and have Optimize Mac Storage enabled are at particular risk.
Typically, if a file is deleted from the local version of iCloud Drive using the context menu's Delete Download option, the file is deleted locally, but saved versions are retained. When the file is downloaded from iCloud Drive again, the versions saved on this Mac are still available.
This is not the case starting with the macOS 14.4 update, as the versions are deleted along with the main file and cannot be restored after downloading again from iCloud Drive as before.
Users running version 14.4 on Mac are advised to turn off Mac Storage Optimization to prevent documents stored on the local iCloud drive from being automatically deleted, resulting in an error.
The bug has been reported to Apple. It remains to be seen when a fix will arrive.
Other problems with macOS 14.4
This is not true the only bug found in macOS 14.4 since its introduction.
On March 12, it was discovered that USB hubs built into monitors no longer work under macOS Sonoma 14.4. Two days later, on March 14, problems with the printers were discovered, including corrupted drivers.
Oracle intervened on March 16, advising users who need to run Java to avoid upgrading to macOS Sonoma 14.4 because it causes Java to quit unexpectedly.
