Netflix subscribers who are still paying monthly fees through the App Store's in-app purchase system will soon have to add a new payment method to keep their accounts active, Netflix tells customers.

Although Netflix stopped allowing customers to subscribe to its streaming service on iOS devices back in 2018, it allowed customers that had already subscribed so way to continue using in-app purchases for payment. However, payments through Apple's platform will be discontinued because Netflix does not want to continue paying Apple a 15 percent discount on subscription fees.

As 9to5Mac notes, Netflix's US support site now says that customers in “some” countries will need add a new payment method. It's unclear which countries Netflix's new policy applies to, but given that it was added to the US site, it will likely apply to US customers.

Some members with Apple bills in some countries may be asked to add a new payment method to continue their subscription.

There is no word on how many Netflix subscribers are still paying through in-app purchases. since it's been almost six years since Netflix removed this option. Since 2018, Netflix has required customers who have Apple devices to sign up for a new Netflix subscription on the Netflix website. It is not possible to subscribe through the Netflix app on an iPhone or iPad, and those devices are presented with a login screen.

When Netflix first removed the ability to pay through the ‌App Store‌, it said that customers who paid for a subscription with through in-app purchases can continue to use this payment method until their accounts are cancelled, but Netflix appears to be running out of patience.

Update: Netflix clarified that the changes affect Basic plan members in some countries, including the US and Canada, and do not affect all Netflix users.
