Asahi Linux complies with OpenGL 4.6 and OpenGL ES 3.2 on Apple Silicon Macs

Asahi Linux Introduces an Open Source Operating System for Apple Silicon Macs

The Asahi The Linux project for Apple Silicon Mac has just become compatible with OpenGL 4.6 and OpenGL ES 3.2, surpassing Apple's current support.

Apple dropped support for OpenGL after focusing on its own Metal graphics API. This means that starting with macOS Mavericks in 2013, Apple is compatible with OpenGL 4.1, although it officially stopped supporting the standard in 2018.

The Asahi Linux Project has announced that a new milestone has been achieved with its work on a compatible GPU. drivers. With the release of a driver compliant with OpenGL ES 3.1 in August 2022, the project has surpassed Apple's implementation, providing compatibility with OpenGL ES 3.1 and OpenGL 4.6.

These systems and implementations require a lot of technical expertise, but at a basic level, Linux users on Apple Silicon Macs will experience better performance from some applications. Workloads based on things like Blender, Ryujinx and Citra now have a compatible and compatible GPU driver for Apple Silicon Macs.

When moving from OpenGL 4.1 to OpenGL 4.6, several features were added, such as:

  • Reliability
  • SPIR-V
  • Clip Control
  • Elimination Distance
  • Computational Shaders
  • Advanced Transform Feedback

Apple requires developers to create apps with using its Metal API, which is more modern and reduces the overhead of executing tasks. However, this means maintaining a proprietary system, which is inherently useless if you want to take your app outside of the Apple ecosystem.

The Asahi Linux project already has a new goal – — Volcano. Like Metal, it is a driver designed to reduce operating costs, but is open source.
