After several months of beta testing, Unity has publicly released support allowing all developers to use it to create their own Apple Vision Pro apps.

Back in July 2023, shortly after Apple's Vision Pro presentation, game engine company Unity launched beta support for VisionOS. It was aimed at developers of games and other applications, in particular those creating applications for the new Apple headset.

The company has now announced that after a six-month beta testing period, the company's VisionOS support is available to all Unity Pro, Enterprise and Industry subscribers.

“You can now use familiar Unity workflows, robust XR tools, and cross-platform compatibility to create immersive spatial experiences for an entirely new ecosystem on Apple Vision Pro,” the company said in a detailed blog post. “Thousands of developers around the world participated in our beta program, working closely with our engineering teams and generously sharing knowledge to build a community ready for the next era of spatial computing.”

Unity says its tools allow developers to create fully immersive mixed reality experiences. But it can also display content that runs in a 2D window and supports porting of existing VR games.

“Creating LEGO Builder's Journey for Apple Vision Pro was an incredible experience,” said Mikkel Fredborg, Technical Lead at Light Brick Studio, “working with a completely new type of interaction and rendering paradigm.”

“Unity has been very supportive in bringing its well-known workflow to a completely new type of system,” continued Fredborg. “With VisionOS support, we were able to take advantage of many of the features that make Apple Vision Pro such a unique platform.”

Solution Games' Tommy Palm says his company is working on an as-yet-unannounced project using Unity's VisionOS support, which will be released later in 2024.

“We're committed to making our games available on new devices that players want to use,” Palm said. “We believe Apple's entry into this market segment will be hugely impactful.”

“Multi-platform support and Unity's comprehensive spatial development tools make it easy to leverage our Unity experience and get started with Apple Vision Pro,” continued Palm. “We're excited to soon announce a new game that's been designed to fully “The company does not support VisionOS at the base level of Unity Personal, but does offer a free 30-day trial of Unity Pro. Please note that Unity only supports VisionOS on Apple Silicon Macs.

Unity Pro subscription starts at $185/month.
