Walmart Starts Selling Macs for the First Time: MacBook Air M1 for $699 [Updated]

Update: Best Buy has now overtaken Walmart and is now selling the M1 MacBook Air for $649.

Walmart is teaming up with Apple to sell Macs for the first time. In a press release today, the company said it is now selling the base model M1 MacBook Air online and in select stores for $699. The move comes a week after Apple unveiled the new MacBook Air M3 and stopped selling the MacBook Air M1 itself.

While Walmart has historically sold Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, it has never sold Macs directly. Instead, the company relies on third-party partners to sell Macs through its online marketplace.

In today's announcement, Walmart highlights that for the first time, customers can buy a Mac directly:

Today, Walmart will begin selling MacBook Air with the M1 chip, continuing to provide superior quality and unmatched affordability to customers. MacBook Air delivers stunning performance and long battery life in a thin and light design. For the first time, customers can purchase Macs directly from Walmart. MacBook Air with the M1 chip is now available on Walmart.com and will soon be available in select Walmart stores for just $699.

Julie Barber, executive vice president of merchandising, added:

“At Walmart, our mission is to help customers save money so they can live better. It's not an either/or question. At the core of this mission is the belief that customers will not have to sacrifice quality because of price. We're committed to bringing premium brands to our physical and virtual shelves, and we're excited to partner with Apple to achieve this goal.”

Apple refreshes its MacBook line Last week we introduced the MacBook Air M3 starting at $1,099 and dropping the price of the MacBook Air M2 to $999. As part of these changes, Apple has also stopped selling the MacBook Air M1, which was previously available for $999.

The M1 MacBook Air's $699 price at Walmart is quite attractive. This is especially true because it is being sold in brand new condition rather than refurbished or refurbished condition. For example, Apple sells the M1 MacBook Air through a refurbished store for $759.

The M1 MacBook Air will be available starting today on Walmart's website and “coming soon”; at select Walmart stores.
