Video shows a functional AirPower prototype charging an Apple Watch

Apple AirPower was canceled in 2019 and never saw the light of day. However, several people have gotten their hands on prototype devices, some of which are partially functional. Now, thanks to an Apple prototype collector, we get our first look at the AirPower prototype charging the Apple Watch.

Video shared by user X, known as “ Demonstration of Apple” shows a working AirPower prototype charging an Apple Watch Series 4 prototype (via MacRumors). This particular prototype has 16 coils, while there are some other prototypes with 14 and even 22 coils.

Again, this isn't the first time we've seen a working AirPower prototype. However, this is the first time we've seen a device that works with the Apple Watch. This is because the Apple Watch charger is proprietary and regular Qi chargers cannot charge the watch. However, this Apple Watch Series 4 prototype and this AirPower prototype work great together.

However, according to a collector, the Apple Watch gets very hot when charging from AirPower, which may have been one of the reasons why Apple refused from the product even before its launch.

For those unfamiliar, Apple announced AirPower, an all-in-one wireless charging solution for multiple Apple devices at the same time. AirPower will have multiple coils, so users won't have to worry about positioning their devices on them to charge. It will be able to charge two iPhones at the same time, or an iPhone and an accessory, such as AirPods or Apple Watch.

Despite the announcement in 2017 Apple never revealed more details about the availability of AirPower or even sent review versions to the press. In 2019, the company confirmed the cancellation of the AirPower launch. Internal prototypes were rumored to be ineffective and had heating issues.

Year. Apple later introduced MagSafe as a new solution to improve wireless charging. Unfortunately, the company seems to have given up on reintroducing something like AirPower. However, you can find Qi chargers that charge multiple devices at the same time.
