Rumor: Apple Developing 90Hz Display Tech for iPad Air, Studio Display, and iMac

A new rumor has emerged today that suggests Apple is developing a 90Hz display that could be destined for the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display.

The rumor comes from an anonymous source who reached out to the Upgrade podcast hosted by Mike Hurley and Jason Snell.

Currently, the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display feature displays with a 60Hz refresh rate. This rumor suggests that the 90Hz panel will first appear on the iPad Air M3, and then come to the 24-inch iMac and Studio Display.

Here's the full quote, sent to Upgrade by an anonymous source:

“I have news about screen improvements for the next-generation M3 iPad Air. Apple is working on a higher refresh rate LCD display with a new LCD panel that's locked at around 90Hz. They're also working on expanding it to other models or products, like the 24-inch iMac and the next-generation Studio Display”

Analyst Ross Young previously reported that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will feature ProMotion displays with support for a 120Hz refresh rate. However, this is the first we've heard about Apple's alleged work on 90Hz display technology for its other products.

According to Bloomberg, the next-generation iPad Air is expected to debut in early 2025. There are no specific rumors yet about when to expect the next-generation Studio Display. The 24-inch iMac was just updated last week, so its next update is likely not scheduled until late 2025.
