Report: iOS 18 will allow users to recolor app icons and place them anywhere on the Home screen

As Mark Gurman reported in his latest Power On newsletter, iOS 18 will give users more options to customize their iPhone’ main screen. In addition to the ability to freely arrange icons rather than being limited by the current fixed grid, Apple is also unlocking app icon customization as a native feature for the first time.

Specifically, Gurman reports. that iOS 18 will allow users to “change the color of app icons.” For example, they could make all their social media apps blue and all their financial apps blue.

Home screen icon customization currently possible through hacks such as creating single-action home screen shortcuts that launch a specific application. But it's a little tricky to set up.

With iOS 18, it looks like this feature will now be fully supported. It's unclear whether icons will be free to customize and change to whatever new image the user desires, or whether the system will simply allow recoloring, that is, keeping the same symbol but changing the color palette used.

iOS 18 will be official unveiled in a couple of weeks at Apple's annual developer conference WWDC, which will take place on June 10 this year. Apple will release the following major versions of its operating systems, including iOS. 18, with an expected greater focus on artificial intelligence features.

In addition to a slew of artificial intelligence capabilities and long-requested Home screen updates like the ability to choose your own app icons, Apple is also expected to update many of the iPhone's built-in features. apps with new features in one of the biggest iOS updates ever.
