Report: Apple Podcasts Prefers Subscription Shows

According to Semafor, Apple's Browse tab favors podcasts that participate in its subscription program.


To be featured at the top of Apple Podcasts' Browse tab, creators simply need to submit a form to Apple, but the report notes that five of the first seven impressions in the Browse Carousel last week in ‌Apple Podcasts‌ app were members of ‌Apple Podcasts‌ Subscriptions.

In 2021, Apple launched podcast subscriptions, allowing creators to offer their audience premium content, such as bonus episodes and exclusive segments, in exchange for a small subscription fee. Apple, in turn, receives up to 30 percent of the revenue from these subscriptions.

One independent podcast executive told Semafor that Apple explicitly told them that subscribing to podcasts would improve their chances of ranking in the carousel, while another noted that ‌Apple Podcasts‌ It was worth subscribing simply for the benefits of being included in the app. The Apple employee added that ‌Apple Podcasts‌ The app is now designed to offer more options for shows participating in the subscription program, with several key spots reserved for this purpose.
