PSA: Upgrading to iPad Pro M4? You'll also need a new Apple Pencil.

Today, the Apple Pencil lineup is more confusing than ever. When Apple introduced the new Apple Pencil Pro, it decided not to discontinue any of the three existing models. This means there are four Pencil options for new customers.

However, what if you already have an Apple Pencil and just want to upgrade your iPad to the attractive new iPad M4 iPad Pro?

We have bad news for you.

Most previous Pencil models are not compatible with the M4 iPad Pro

Apple's website describes the new iPad Pro's compatibility with existing Apple Pencil options, and only one previous Pencil model works with the M4 iPad Pro: Pencil with USB-C.

I'm an Apple supporter by most measures, but this is pure greed.

Treating professional customers this way will turn off users and does not bode well. for their cost-effective options.

Tim's Apple is essentially “squeezing every last drop out of our consumers.”

I I was planning on upgrading, but it really put me off the new iPad line.

If you prefer the 2nd generation Pencil, as most existing iPad Pro users probably do, you'll have to buy a new Pencil. 2nd and 1st generation Apple Pencil models will not work with the iPad Pro M4.

If you don't already have a USB-C Pencil, you can use the Pencil with the new iPad Pro by purchasing an Apple Pencil Pro or the aforementioned USB-C model.

9to5Mac's opinion

The new iPad Pro is already enough pricey, so unfortunately most existing Pro users upgrading to the M4 will also have to budget for the new Pencil.
