My Favorite Mac Accessory Is Much More Convenient Than Other Peripherals

Earlier this year, I told my doctor that I had been experiencing persistent, severe pain in my wrist since last summer. A few weeks later, I was hooked up to a machine that delivers mild electrical currents to complete a nerve conduction study. As expected, the cause was moderate carpal tunnel syndrome.

This prompted me to ditch the trackpad and find the Logi MX Ergo Wireless Trackball Mouse I bought a couple of years ago. Its fixed position on the desk and two vertical angle options made it much more comfortable to use than a traditional mouse or trackpad.

A Tried and Trusted Peripheral

While I was exploring the possibility of surgery to relieve my wrist pain, I switched to the Logi MX Ergo for all of my Mac desktops and most of my MacBook use.

By this summer, I noticed that my wrist pain was starting to improve for the first time in a year. I think spending more time at my desk while working has helped a lot, and that's partly because of the Logi MX Ergo.

The only problem? I'd have to hunt down a micro USB cable every few months when the mouse died. As probably the last remaining device using that port, the Logi MX Ergo became a bit of a pain in the ass for another reason, albeit not as physical.

Until recently, the compromise was worth the hassle. I learned that Logitech had released the Logi MX Ergo S, which is virtually identical to the mouse except for a USB-C port replacing the micro USB port for charging. Suddenly, my Logi MX Ergo experience was on the up-and-up.

Thunderbolt 3 delivers 40Gbps for blazing-fast data transfers. Prices start at $199.99.

USB-C All the Things

Logitech kindly provided a review unit of the updated S a couple of weeks ago. First impressions? Charging via USB-C before use has proven to be very convenient. One cable on my desk charges my iPhone, iPad, AirPods, keyboard, and a host of other accessories. Awesome!

At the time, I was spending time with another mouse that didn't have the same ergonomics. No major wrist pain, so no problem.

Bah, crap!

However, in the last few days, the carpal tunnel has gotten really bad, like a throbbing toothache that spreads to all my fingers. I'm still not ready for surgery, but I'm wearing the brace I got a year ago. It's helping.

I also decided to try out the Logi MX Ergo S today to see if it would improve. My wrist and hand were instantly grateful. While everyone I know asks me if my ball mouse is from the 90s (no, but my nerves and bones are from the 90s), I'm just happy with how nice it feels to hold it in my hand, controlling the cursor while the flash is at its peak.

Beyond Ergonomics

Because it stays locked in place while in use, the MX Ergo S is also ideal for using the cursor on iPad and Apple Vision Pro when you’re away from your desk. There's no need for a flat surface with room to move the mouse.

I'm open to trying more ergonomic peripherals in the future, but for now, the Logi MX Ergo/Ergo S is my go-to solution for minimizing the finger pain and wrist throbbing that comes with a dozen years of 40+ hour weeks at the computer.

Use it while charging; no need for inverted turtle mode.
