More advertising is coming to Prime Video, including interactive shopping ads during breaks.

2024 is shaping up to be the year of Amazon Prime Video advertising.

In January, the streaming service, which had long been ad-free, debuted in the ad tier and instantly upgraded nearly all of its users to that tier. Since then, the only way for Prime subscribers to avoid ads is to pay an extra $3 per month.

Pretty soon, that $3 option could become more attractive as Prime Video plans to add more ways. users will see advertising and make purchases as a key component of that advertising.

Prime Video to increase advertising and promote shopping

From Sharon Harding of Ars Technica:

Those who choose Prime Video with ads will soon see shoppable carousel ads, interactive pause ads, and interactive brand quiz ads, as Amazon calls them. Amazon said advertisers will be able to buy these new displays so they can be shown “across the vast majority of Prime Video content, wherever it airs.” All of the new ad formats allow the viewer to place advertised items in their Amazon cart.

Here's what each of the three ad changes will bring:

  • Carousel Ads will play during regular ad breaks, providing a variety of suggested items to shop for and the ability to add them directly to your Amazon cart.
  • Break Ads is a new addition that brings ads to the break screen. for featured products, which will also include an “Add to Cart” button.
  • Brand quizzes will drive engagement by offering incentives such as credits toward Amazon purchases.

9to5Mac's Opinion

Making ads more interactive to promote purchases was a natural next step for the e-commerce giant. Ad-based tiers have become the norm on virtually every streaming service. But at a time when competition among streamers is so intense, Prime Video users still feel like not much has changed in a short period of time.

Apple TV+ is one of the major streaming services. the player still sticks to his ad-free approach. However, as such actions become more common, it will be interesting to see how long this approach will last.
