Macs lead global PC growth as shipments return to pre-pandemic levels

Today, IDC released its latest report on global PC shipments for the first quarter of 2024. While Apple still doesn't lead in volume, it did take first place in year-over-year growth. Here's how Mac shipments, market share and growth compare to Dell, HP, Lenovo and others.

IDC highlights that Global PC shipments the last two years have fallen sharply, with the first quarter of 2024 marking a return to growth.

Average growth when looking at all manufacturers was not all that impressive: growth was 1.5% YoY. However, Apple saw that figure increase nearly 10-fold, with Mac sales up 14.6% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to 2023.

Acer ranked second in growth with 9 .2%, and Lenovo was third with 7.8%.

Lenovo ranked first in PC shipments market share with 23%, HP was second with 20.1%, and Dell was third with market share 15.5%.

Even with strong 14.6% YoY growth, Apple&Mac market share was 8.1% in the first quarter of 2024, up 1% from first quarter of 2023. During the first quarter, Apple shipped 4.8 million Mac computers.

As for the factors contributing to this, IDC notes. increasing shipments to the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, while China sees demand decline.

As inflation declines, PC shipments have begun to rebound most regions, leading to growth in the Americas and Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). However, deflationary pressure in China has directly impacted the global PC market. Weak demand in China, the largest consumer of desktop PCs, led to another quarter of decline in global desktop shipments, which were already facing pressure from laptops as the preferred form factor.

Apple shared several times that its MacBook Air is the world's most popular laptop, which was updated with the M3 chip this spring.
