Apple released its first M4 Macs, but its most popular Mac wasn't among them. The MacBook Air doesn't have an M4 chip yet. But here's everything we know about when the update will arrive and what else to expect from the new model.
>M4 MacBook Air Release Date
With the debut of the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini this week, Apple's Mac lineup is locked in for the rest of 2024.
So when will the new MacBook Air come out?
Reports are putting the M4 MacBook Air release date in early 2025.
More specifically, March is likely.
Last year, the M3 Air debuted in March. Apple also traditionally holds more product launches in March than January or February.
New Features to Expect
Rumors about new features for the MacBook Air have been minimal. However, Apple’s recently released new Macs have given us plenty of hints about what’s to come with the new MacBook Air.
Here’s what to expect:
- M4 chip for faster performance
- 16GB base RAM
- A neural engine capable of 38 trillion operations per second
- A 12MP Center Stage camera
- Bigger battery life
- Possibly a nano-texture display
All of this adds up to a device that’s optimized for Apple Intelligence, but also gives Air users more of what they love.
The M4 MacBook Air will still come in the same 13-inch and 15-inch versions. Which brings us to the things that won't change in the new model.
What Not to Expect
The MacBook Air was redesigned with the M2 model in 2022, and Apple isn’t expected to change that core design anytime soon.
As a result, the M4 MacBook Air won’t get a new design, but will instead retain the existing look of the M2 and M3 models and the same 13-inch and 15-inch sizes.
Additionally, while Apple just unveiled the new M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, they likely won’t be available in any MacBook Air configuration.
One of the ways Apple differentiates its laptops is by keeping the MacBook Air on just the base M-series chip, while the MacBook Pro comes in more powerful Pro and Max variants.
The M4 Air will likely also retain the existing $1,099 starting price, following the pattern of Apple’s other M4 Macs to date.
M4 MacBook Air: Wrapping Up
The new MacBook Air isn't expected to be a game-changer, but it should come with some major upgrades — like other M4 Macs — that will make it an attractive buy.
