iPhone 17 Rumors: Redesign with Smaller Dynamic Island, New Slim Model and More

Apple is preparing big changes to the iPhone 17 lineup next year, according to a new report from reliable Haitong International Securities Analyst Jeff Pu. In an investor note seen by 9to5Mac, Pu says the iPhone 17 models will have an updated design, an improved front-facing camera, a smaller Dynamic Island, and more.

Poo also says Apple will introduce a new “iPhone 17 Slim” is a model that replaces the “Plus” model in the line.

Here is the iPhone 17 lineup presented by Pu:

  • iPhone 17: 6, 1-inch display
  • iPhone 17 Slim: 6.6-inch display
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3-inch display
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max : 6.9 inch display

In terms of design, Pu reports that the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Slim, and iPhone 17 Pro will feature a “more sophisticated” aluminum design. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will continue to be made of titanium. The iPhone 17 Pro Max will also feature a “narrowed dynamic island.” while other models will retain the current design.

The reduction in the size of the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be possible thanks to the new “metal lens” technology for the proximity sensor. Metalens technology could help Apple significantly reduce the size of the Face ID sensor.

The alleged iPhone 17 Slim is consistent with a previous report from analyst Ross Young. This new iPhone 17 model will replace the “Plus” model and offer a “slim design”; Poo says. No additional design details are included in the report.

In terms of performance and specs, Pu reports:

  • iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim: 8GB RAM, A18 or A19 chip
  • iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max: 12 GB RAM, A19 Pro chip

Currently, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have 6 GB RAM, and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have 8 GB. random access memory. With this year's iPhone 16 lineup, Apple will consolidate 8GB of storage across the lineup. Then, the bifurcation will return with the iPhone 17 lineup in 2025, according to Pu.

According to Pu, all four iPhone 17 models will be equipped with 24-megapixel front cameras. This is a noticeable upgrade over the current 12-megapixel front-facing cameras used by Apple. Ming-Chi Kuo also previously reported that the iPhone 17 will feature an upgraded 24MP front camera.
