iPhone 17 Developed in India: What to Expect from the Base Model

Joe Rossignol

Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn is carrying out early development of the base model iPhone 17 at a plant in Bangalore, India, The Information's Wayne Ma reports. It's being considered a “milestone” for Apple's manufacturing efforts in India.

The paid report says that this iPhone 17 model is already in the early stages of development, as Apple evaluates whether engineers in India can develop iPhone prototypes that will match the quality of those made at its California headquarters. Apple's goal is to start developing new iPhones as early as possible in locations closer to final assembly sites, which could lower the company's operating costs.

The report doesn't reveal any new features or changes planned for the iPhone 17, but Apple supply chain analyst Jeff Pu outlined some of the features he expects from the base model in a research report published earlier this month:

  • 6.1-inch display
  • A19 chip
  • 8GB of RAM
  • Upgraded 24-megapixel front camera
  • Two rear cameras, including a 48-megapixel Fusion camera and a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide camera
  • Aluminum body

Based on these specs, the base iPhone 17 won't be a significant upgrade from the iPhone 16.

Major development locations for the alleged Ultra-thin iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will still be sold in China, according to the report. Pu believes that the Ultra-thin iPhone 17 will come with a single 48-megapixel rear camera, 8GB of RAM, and more, while the iPhone 17 Pro models are rumored to come with a 48-megapixel telephoto camera, 12GB of RAM, and more. The devices are expected to launch in September next year.
