iOS 18.2 Adds Two Hidden Tools to Control Your iPhone's Volume

iOS 18.2 comes with a ton of new features that are hard to miss, like a new Mail design, a new Image Playground app, and Genmoji. But the Settings app in iOS 18.2 also has two new tools: You can add volume controls back to your iPhone's lock screen, and you can set maximum volume limits.

#1: Volume Slider on Lock Screen

Previously, controlling volume from your iPhone's lock screen was easy, with a dedicated slider available when audio was playing.

Apple removed this feature back in iOS 16, but now you can get it back thanks to a new setting in iOS 18.2.

To bring the volume slider back to the audio controls on your iPhone's Lock screen, open the Settings app, then follow these steps:

  1. Go to Accessibility
  2. Scroll down and tap Audio & Sound Visual
  3. Turn on Always Show Volume Control

Now, the next time you play any type of audio on your iPhone, the Lock screen will provide a convenient, always-accessible volume slider.

#2: Limit the Maximum Volume

This next tool is focused on limiting the maximum volume your iPhone's built-in speaker will play.

Perhaps you have a small child using your iPhone or iPad and need to limit the volume to a reasonable level. Or you accidentally turn up the volume at work or in another inconvenient location.

By going to Settings ⇾ Sound & Haptics, you'll find a new “Volume Limit” screen under the “Built-in Speaker” heading.

Here's how Apple describes the tool:

Set a limit on how loud your iPhone speaker can play audio, such as songs, movies, and other media. This limit doesn't affect phone or FaceTime calls, emergency calls and alerts, ringtones, alarms, system sounds, or Find My sounds.

If you choose to limit the maximum volume on your iPhone, you can set the maximum limit anywhere from 20% of the default volume to 90%.
