Indie App Review: TechniCalc is a Comprehensive Calculator with a Clear Interface

Welcome to Indie App Spotlight, a weekly 9to5Mac series where we showcase the latest apps in the indie app world. If you're a developer and would like to have your app featured, get in touch.

TechniCalc is a full-featured calculator app with all the advanced features you need, but without the clunky or outdated UI. It's focused on being clean, easy to use, and still suitable for mathematicians. It is available for iPhone, iPad, Mac.

Interface Features

Many advanced calculator apps feel like they are still from the 90s, but not TechniCalc. Its beautiful interface scales beautifully across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It also has both a light and dark mode. The developer focused on making two key interactions better than the competition, making it a pleasure to use.

When you type an equation, TechniCalc keeps everything visible, whereas some apps like to hide the previous number you typed after you hit the plus sign or whatever. This allows you to easily read the equation.

Also, the keyboard is fully functional in both portrait and landscape orientations, reducing the need to rotate the device. This is achieved by grouping items into submenus behind the buttons, which keeps the interface looking clean while still preserving the calculator’s 100+ buttons.

For example, if you press and hold degrees, you’ll get a submenu that shows you arcminutes and arcseconds. You can also press and hold sin to get arcsin, etc.

Math Capabilities

In addition to the ability to perform basic calculations, TechniCalc has just about everything you could want in a full-featured calculator, including the following:

  • Parentheses
  • Square and cube roots
  • Exponentials and logarithms
  • Trigonometry
  • Trigonometry (sin, cos, tan)
  • Degrees, radians, and grads
  • Constants (pi, e, and over 100 other physical constants)

It also has a formula book, a calculation history, a built-in unit and currency converter, and a statistics mode.

For advanced math, it also supports the following:

  • Nearly unlimited sizes – 1,000,000+ factorials
  • Square roots and logarithms to any base
  • Factorial, nPr, nCr, and gamma
  • Hyperbolic trigonometry (sinh, cosh, tanh)
  • Vectors and matrices
  • Imaginary and complex numbers
  • Sums and products of series
  • Numerical integration and differentiation

  • Programmer mode

Whatever you need from a calculator, TechniCalc will likely help you.
