How do you know if your iPhone battery is healthy and when is it time to replace it?

If you're just wondering how your iPhone's battery is holding up, or you're having battery life issues or shutdown emergencies , this is easy to check in the iOS settings. Below we will tell you how to check the condition of your iPhone battery, tell you when to replace it, the expected charging cycle and much more.

iPhone 14 and 15 devices, the most expensive out-of-warranty battery replacement is $99. But in March 2023, we also saw a change that increased the cost of replacing batteries for all older Apple iPhone models by $20. This brings the price of the iPhone 13 and iPhone X to $89, and the iPhone SE, iPhone 8 and earlier to $69.

When should you replace your iPhone battery?

  • TL;DR: When the battery charge level drops below 80% of its original capacity, you can consider replacing strong>depending on the performance of your battery. The same goes if you see a warning that your battery is low or won't hold a charge.
    • In the section “Battery Status & Charging” shown above, you should see a warning if your battery's condition has deteriorated and is causing problems such as unexpected shutdowns and/or an inability to maintain peak performance.

  • Apple says iPhone batteries are “designed to retain up to 80% of their original capacity over 500 full charge cycles under normal conditions.”
  • If you are in the US, replacement is possible. it comes with an included one-year warranty or AppleCare. However, if the warranty has expired, Apple charges $69-$99 for the iPhone battery replacement service.

    When the iPhone's battery capacity drops below 80% of its original capacity, a feature called “Performance Management” can be applied automatically. This helps prevent unexpected shutdowns.

    However, you can turn off performance throttling. Look for the small “Turn Off” button at the end of the text under “Maximum Performance.”

    If you see a message that your battery status is degraded or unknown, go to an Apple Store, contact Apple Support, or an authorized Apple Service Provider if you would like an Apple Certified Battery Replacement.

    The title of the article makes me cringe. However, this is good information to point people to.

    I would add a rule of thumb: charge before it goes below 20% and stop when it reaches 80%. I use shortcuts for notifications and was able to keep the max capacity at 100% on a year old phone.

    How are charge cycles measured?

    Here is Apple's description of how charge cycles are determined:

    You complete one charge cycle when you use (discharge) an amount equal to 100% of your battery's capacity – but not necessarily all from one charge. For example, you can use 75% of the battery's capacity in one day and then fully charge it overnight. If you use 25% the next day, you will have discharged 100% in total, and two days will be one charge cycle. The cycle may take several days to complete.
