HomeKit Weekly: The Best Smart Door Locks That Support Home Key

If you're a HomeKit nerd like me, you know how handy it is for home automation. For me, one of the most exciting additions to smart home security in the last few years is Apple's Home Key, which lets you unlock your door using just your iPhone or Apple Watch. No apps or Bluetooth connectivity required – tap your device and you're in business.

In this blog, I'll be highlighting the best HomeKit-compatible Home Key-enabled locks, highlighting what makes them stand out and why they should be at the top of your smart home wish list this Christmas.

To use Home Key, you need an NFC-compatible lock. The Home Key feature will be saved in the Wallet app on your iPhone or Apple Watch along with other items like credit cards and CarKey. When you get to your door, you can open the Wallet app and unlock it with a button. You can also grant temporary access to guests by sharing a pass with them.

Level Lock+

Level Lock+ is an upgraded version of the popular Level Lock, offering even more convenience and security features for your home. One of the key differences between the two is that Level Lock+ features Home Key support, allowing you to unlock your door using NFC technology. This means you can simply tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to the lock to gain access, without the need for keys or passwords.

In addition to Home Key support, Level Lock+ offers all the features of the original Level Lock, such as the ability to lock and unlock your door using your voice, the Level app, or Apple Watch. You can also set up automation rules to lock or unlock your door at certain times of day or when certain events occur, such as when you arrive home. The lock also features a tamper-resistant interior cover and a strong, secure deadbolt, keeping your home safe.

Aqara Smart Lock 50

The Aqara U50 includes Zigbee and Bluetooth protocols, allowing it to connect directly to the Aqara Home app. This means easy setup, lock management, and firmware updates, all without the need for an Aqara hub. However, pairing it with an Aqara hub unlocks its full potential for fine-tuning all the features. The Aqara U50 includes compatibility with a variety of Matter-compatible platforms, such as Amazon, Apple HomeKit (our favorite), Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. With the hub, you can control the lock remotely and integrate it with other smart home devices for customized automation and control.

  • Supports NFC cards and PIN unlocking: This feature strikes a great balance between the home button and the physical key. You can also buy NFC cards or use a PIN on the device.

Schlage Encode Plus

The Schlage Encode Plus is a HomeKit-enabled smart door lock that can be controlled via HomeKit and the Schlage app. One of the features that makes it attractive compared to other options is the range of styles for the outside of the lock. Of course, it supports Apple Home Key out of the box.

Aqara Smart Lock U100 with Home Key

The Aqara Door Lock U100 is a budget smart lock with Apple Home Key support, allowing users to open their doors with a single tap using their iPhone or Apple Watch. It features NFC for quick access, as well as traditional pin and fingerprint options. While setup is simple, the documentation could be improved. The lock also includes a USB-C port for backup power and runs on four AA batteries. At under $200, it offers solid value, but its “smart lock” look may not be for everyone. Aqara Smart Lock U200 with Home Key

The Aqara U200 is a great choice for those looking to easily upgrade their current deadbolts. Its streamlined design makes it ideal for homeowners and renters, allowing you to upgrade Euro mortise locks and American deadbolts without rekeying or modifying your door. Installing the Aqara U200 is easy and requires no tools other than a screwdriver.

Building on the popular features of previous Aqara locks, the Aqara U200 offers local and encrypted fingerprint and password storage, PIN protection to prevent prying eyes, and modes such as Do Not Disturb, Passage, and Night Latch. Additionally, the Aqara U200 introduces a silent unlock mode to reduce noise, a pull spring for handleless or inward-opening doors, and convenient turn-to-lock and turn-to-unlock features.

The Yale Assure Lock 2 is a stylish and feature-rich HomeKit door lock that offers a range of convenient and secure features. One of the standout features of the Yale Assure Lock 2 is its sleek design, which includes a large, backlit touch keypad that is resistant to weather and other external factors. This lock is designed to be keyless, so you can simply enter your password on the keypad to unlock your door.
