What is an Apple car key ?
This feature allows users to add car keys to the Wallet app and then use the Wallet app to lock, unlock, and start the car. While specific implementations vary by automaker, there are several different ways to use the Apple Car Key feature:
- Passive Login: Approach the car with the device, it will unlock, start the car while inside and walk away from the car with the device, it will lock.
- Proximity Lock, unlock, and start your vehicle by holding the device close to the door handle or key reader.
- Remotely. You can use your device to remotely lock and unlock your car and use other features.
The car key function also includes express mode support. This feature allows you to use your car key without unlocking your device or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. The Wallet app also supports car key sharing through tools like Messages, Mail, and AirDrop.

What is the cost of deploying one machine for this technology? Because that's essentially nothing in four years for a feature that is radically useful and could be used by half the population of the Western world. You'd think every manufacturer would go out of their way to offer it on every model (especially if CarKey automatically records your car's location when you walk away from it so you can quickly find it again). This means that something is holding them back. Are these licensing fees? Is this the cost of the equipment? Is this gross incompetence? What?

Currently, these are the only cars that Apple says support the car key. Ideally, adoption will only increase, but we'll have to wait for more announcements from automakers to know for sure.
