Gurman: New Apple TV and HomePod mini to come out in 2025, will use Apple network chip

Apple is reportedly preparing to take another significant step toward silicon independence, according to a report by Mark Gurman for Bloomberg. The shift is expected to first show up in updated Apple TV and HomePod mini hardware as early as next year.

The company plans to replace Broadcom's combo Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips with its own solution starting next year, according to reliable source Mark Gurman.

The chip, which the company calls “Proxima,” has been in development for several years and represents Apple's latest move to reduce its reliance on third-party suppliers, according to the report. TSMC will manufacture the component, continuing their ongoing partnership in Apple's chip design strategy.

Proxima’s rollout will begin with updates to Apple’s home devices, specifically new versions of the Apple TV and HomePod mini planned for 2025, Gurman reports first. The technology is expected to arrive on iPhones that year, with iPad and Mac integration to follow in 2026.

The initiative is separate from Apple’s previously announced plans to ditch Qualcomm modems, though the two custom chips are designed to work together as part of Apple’s overall wireless strategy. The company aims to create a more tightly integrated, power-efficient wireless solution across its entire product line.

Broadcom has established itself as an industry leader in wireless components, and Apple’s first-generation chip will have to meet high performance expectations. The new component will support the Wi-Fi 6E standard, offering improved throughput and faster speeds.

The timing of this transition coincides with Apple’s broader 2025 smart home strategy, which reportedly includes plans for an AI-powered home hub and a standalone security camera. A custom wireless chip could enable better integration and faster data syncing between Apple’s home devices.

Speaking of Broadcom, it was reported yesterday that Apple and Broadcom are developing Apple’s first server chip designed for AI processing. This could very well be part of Apple's plans to release a conversational version of Siri based on LLM, similar to ChatGPT. Gurman said it's on Apple's roadmap, with a launch planned for 2026.
