Current iOS 18 bug prevents you from saving photo edits

By Julie Clover

There is a persistent but rare bug in the Photos app that some iPhone users are experiencing after updating to iOS 18. The issue occurs when attempting to save changes to an image, with users seeing the following message: “There was an error saving this photo. Please try again later.”

As the message suggests, the changes cannot be saved, and tapping “Cancel” and discarding the changes is the only way to exit the editing interface.

Many complaints about this issue come from users who have the iPhone 16 model, but it appears to be affecting some older iPhones as well. We've seen this bug several times at MacRumors, and it appears to be affecting every version of iOS 18 to date.

The bug first started being reported in September and has continued to trickle in since then. Most recently, several beta testers running iOS 18.2 have reported seeing the pop-up. It's worth noting that this is a bug that some people were experiencing before iOS 18, but it seems to be happening more frequently now.

It's unclear what's causing the issue, and it doesn't appear to be affecting all users or even every photo. It may be related to Live Photos or an issue with iCloud Photos. Some users are experiencing glitches in all photos from a given day, indicating a problem with capturing or saving photos.

There is no complete solution, but duplicating the corrupted image with a “still photo” allows you to save the changes, but it removes the Live Photo and Photographic styles. Apple is aware of the issue and is working on a fix.
