While Apple is in the process of rolling out new Apple Intelligence features as part of iOS 18, it is also working on yet-to-be-announced features for iOS 19. One of those features is an updated version of Siri that is powered by more advanced large language models, or LLMs. The news was detailed in a new report from Bloomberg today.
‘New Siri’ with iOS 19
Mark Gurman reports that Apple is calling it “LLM Siri” internally. The updated assistant is currently being tested as part of a separate app, but will replace the current Siri interface when it launches.
The report details that while Apple plans to introduce Siri LLM as part of iOS 19 and macOS 16 next year, the new platform won’t actually launch until spring 2026.
The updated Siri will rely on Apple’s new AI models to interact more like a human and handle tasks in a way closer to Google’s ChatGPT and Gemini. It will also make expanded use of App Intents, which allow for more precise control over third-party apps. And the software will be able to use Apple Intelligence features, such as the ability to write and summarize text.
As part of iOS 18.1, Apple introduced a new design for Siri with improvements to its knowledge of Apple products and improved handling of multiple commands, a new Type to Siri feature, and other small updates. iOS 18.2 will further improve Siri with ChatGPT integration. iOS 18.2 is currently in beta and will be released to everyone in December.
With iOS 18.3 and beyond next year, Siri will be able to perform actions within apps and understand your personal context to answer questions.
Apple’s goal is to bring ChatGPT functionality into the system as part of the new Siri LLM launching with iOS 19, and to highlight the privacy benefits of its platform over its competitors.
iOS 19 and macOS 16 are expected to be announced at WWDC 2025 next June.
