Apple Working on 'LLM Siri' for 2026 Launch

By Julie Clover

Apple is working on a smarter version of Siri that employees have taken to calling “LLM Siri,” Bloomberg reports. Apple is developing a more capable Siri to better compete with chatbots like ChatGPT, with plans to use “advanced large language models.”

The chatbot version of Siri will be able to hold ongoing conversations, like ChatGPT. Apple wants customers to be able to better communicate with the personal assistant, with Siri responding more like a human. Using larger language models will also allow Siri to do much more complex tasks that Apple has to rely on OpenAI's ChatGPT in iOS 18.2 for.

Apple is working to improve what Siri can do within and across apps using Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, and this will lay the groundwork for an updated version of Siri. For this functionality, Apple will use the first-generation Apple LLM to evaluate queries to determine whether to use Siri's existing infrastructure or request a second LLM that can handle more complex queries.

Apple is testing the new Siri in a standalone app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but it will eventually replace the current version of Siri. The Siri update could be announced as early as 2025, likely during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June, where it will unveil iOS 19.

While Siri will be previewed, Apple does not intend to release the update for several months after its unveiling. Apple is currently targeting spring 2026, but Apple's plans could change.
