iOS 17.4 has been out for a few days now, and one thing I'll never get used to about Apple is that it packs some new features for a mid-cycle release. IT managers managing Apple fleets should take note of several new features. Let's dive into what's new in iOS 17.4 for enterprise.

About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers managed the corporate IT network from 2009 to 2021. With experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, MDM, enterprise Wi-Fi, thousands of Macs, and thousands of iPads, Bradley shares how Apple IT managers deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, and train users, stories from the IT management trenches, and ways Apple can improve its products for IT departments.

Changes to Stolen Device Protection and MDM

Stolen Device Protection provides increased security for your iPhone when it is outside of your usual environment, such as at home or at work. The purpose of this feature is to Protect your accounts and personal information if your iPhone is stolen, providing an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access.

With the release of iOS 17.4, users no longer have to disable Stolen Device Protection when enrolling in Mobile Device Management (MDM) or setting up an Exchange account. There is a caveat, however. If you're in a place that your phone doesn't recognize as familiar, you may have to wait up to an hour.

Other updates

If your school or company configuration profiles allow it, users with managed Apple IDs can include student IDs or employee badges in their Apple Wallet. MDM now has the ability to deploy smaller versions of applications, optimizing time, storage, and bandwidth usage.

Something that will become more and more important to Apple's enterprise customers is alternative app stores. . This version of iOS adds new restrictions and commands to manage alternative app stores. While this is focused on the European Union for now, I suspect Apple knows it will have to deal with this globally in the coming years. For business devices, it's probably safer to rely entirely on the Apple App Store for now.

One final note: iOS 17.4 improves the reliability of making phone calls and viewing contacts on devices with thousands of contacts and subject to Guided Open restrictions.

Summary

I like Apple's recent trend of gradually rolling out new features rather than delaying them until the next major release. in the fall. These are all small but useful features for managing Apple devices.
