Many people in the Apple ecosystem love staying on the latest and greatest iPhone, iPad, and Mac. If you trade in an old iPhone to one of your carriers, have you ever wondered what happens to them? Especially in recent years, old iPhones continue to be incredibly valuable to new people, so I recently spoke with the team at Assurant to learn more about their new capabilities.

When you turn in a device, it’s easy to think that’s where the story ends, but it’s just the beginning. Behind the scenes, companies like Assurant are playing a vital role in breathing new life into your old tech. Their latest facility, the 259,000-square-foot Device Innovation and Care Center in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, showcases the scale and complexity of today’s device lifecycle process.
Assurant’s new Nashville-area center, which is twice the size of their previous facility in La Vergne, is expected to process and repurpose millions of devices each year. The facility employs about 800 people to test, refurbish, and prepare devices for new users or responsibly recycle them if they are beyond repair. In 2023 alone, their efforts will prevent 1.16 million metric tons of carbon emissions from being released into the atmosphere. That’s a colossal impact from devices that users once thought were destined for the trash.
Once a device enters Assurant’s “Device Service Center,” it goes through a series of carefully calibrated processes, many of which rely on artificial intelligence and automation. A team of engineers works on-site to continually improve these systems, using robotics and machine learning to improve efficiency and quality. From diagnostics to software wipes, component replacements and beyond, every step is part of a streamlined process designed to give devices a new purpose, often extending their lifespan by years.
“While others may outsource, this new facility demonstrates our investment in innovative technology and our people, allowing us to continually improve the experience of our customers and employees by owning every step of the process,” said Biju Nair, executive vice president and president of Global Connected Living and International. “This investment, along with our talented team, drives greater sustainability in the connected device ecosystem by efficiently delivering secondary devices to the global marketplace.
Centrally located and in close proximity to our state’s capital, Mt. Juliet is poised to support Assurant and the opening of its new Device Innovation and Service Center,” said Stuart S. McWhorter, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. Assurant will benefit from Nashville’s thriving talent pool and access to leading research institutions, while also receiving the local support and resources needed to continue growing in Wilson County. I thank Assurant for choosing to remain in Tennessee, and we look forward to the success that follows today’s grand opening.
But Assurant isn’t just focused on rebuilding; it’s also making significant investments in the future of the Tennessee region. The company’s $100,000 grant to Middle Tennessee State University will help fund the Assurant Engineering Innovation Lab, which will support the training of future engineers in mechatronics and automation. The investment highlights the ongoing shift toward a circular economy in tech, where keeping devices in circulation for as long as possible is both a business model and an environmental mission.

So the next time you sell an iPhone or iPad, remember that it will likely end up in a place like an Assurant repair center, where it will be given the chance to do some good for someone else, or at least save the planet from a few more grams of waste.
