JumpCloud has published a report on IT trends for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for the first quarter of 2024. The latest edition of the report examines the impact of artificial intelligence on identity management, security concerns, economic uncertainty and the growing dependence on managed service providers (MSPs) for IT operations. The report polled 1,213 SME IT executives from the UK, US and India.

About Apple @ Jobs : Bradley Chambers managed the corporate IT network from 2009 to 2021. With experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, MDM, enterprise Wi-Fi, thousands of Macs, and thousands of iPads, Bradley shares how Apple IT managers deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, and train users, stories from the trenches of IT management, and ways Apple can improve its products for IT departments.

Device Breakdowns

Average device failure statistics among SMBs provide a telling picture of where Apple is in the enterprise: 59.5% of devices run Windows, up from 64% in April 2023. The share of macOS devices rose to 22.4% from 20%, and Linux usage rose to 21.7% from 16%.

Interestingly, despite the decline, Windows is expected to see the most significant growth in usage, with 55.5% of SMBs expecting growth, up from 46% in April 2023. However, macOS is not far behind, with 41.5% of SMEs expecting increased usage within their companies, up sharply from 26%.

When broken down by region, the distribution of MacOS devices shows intriguing regional differences. In India, macOS usage is highest among SMEs with Windows at 50.6%, macOS at 23.9% and Linux leading at 26.9%. This contrasts with the UK and US, where Windows retains a stronger influence but is followed by a growing preference for macOS and Linux.

Preference among IT admins for Mac devices is highest in India, at 22.4. % of SMB IT administrators would choose exclusively Apple laptops and desktops for their organization, compared to 18.1% in the US and 14.2% in the UK. This preference underscores Apple's growing appeal in India's SME sector.

Expectations of increased macOS usage next year further highlight regional differences. 58% of SMEs in India expect macOS usage to increase compared to 36.6% in the US and 29.6% in the UK. This suggests a significant shift towards macOS in India, indicating a potential shift in how SMEs in different regions approach their IT infrastructure and device strategy.
