At the end of 2023, Dashlane made a bold decision: It was time to ditch the master password for its password manager in favor of passwordless logins. Today, the company is releasing some information showing how new users' use of its product has changed since this change.

About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers managed the corporate IT network from 2009 to 2021. With his experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, mobile device management, enterprise Wi-Fi, thousands of Macs and 1,000 iPads, Bradley will share how Apple IT managers implement Apple devices, build networks to support them, train users, tell stories from the trenches of IT management and ways Apple can improve its products for IT departments.

Access Keys is a new implementation of passwordless technology that allows end users to access online services without the need for passwords. We're proud to be the first credential manager that allows users to create, save, and sign in to websites with passwords and maintain them across all devices.

Authentication in the Dashlane app requires a different approach as it is not just about authentication but also about accessing your data by decrypting your storage. We leveraged our existing zero-knowledge security architecture, which ensures that sensitive data processing occurs locally on the user's device without access from Dashlane or anyone else.

While access keys can authenticate access to websites, They cannot currently be used to encrypt or decrypt storage data. Encryption remains critical to maintaining our zero-knowledge architecture.

When analyzing the behavior of users who have chosen the new passwordless feature compared to those who have been using a master password since mid-December, the results were quite striking. Passwordless users saw a noticeable increase in app usage: Dashlane usage increased by 40%, autofill usage increased by 25%, and item sharing skyrocketed by 240%. Additionally, there has been a 200% increase in the addition of 2FA tokens to vault items and a 20% increase in the use of Dashlane's password generator to create strong and unique passwords for new websites.

This behavior indicates that users are very interested and concerned about security when they default to passwordless login support. This confirms that lowering barriers to entry can increase user engagement and security awareness. Initial results are promising and suggest that moving customers to a password-free world will lead to improved security outcomes. Dashlane is now working on the next important step: making passwordless login fully available to all new Dashlane Personal Plan users across all entry points, including mobile and web, through the Dashlane extension.

The transition is made easier by a proprietary PIN code for device-specific, allowing users to easily set up Dashlane on new devices using an already registered device. This new feature simplifies the process and improves security, making the user experience smoother and safer.

9to5Mac’ It's necessary

I've been optimistic about passwordless logins for years, but adoption has been gradual, but that's not surprising. The technical aspects of passkeys are complex, but changing consumer behavior is a radical shift. I firmly believe that sometime within the next decade, password logins will become standard for everything, and this will greatly improve enterprise security.
