Apple to Reportedly Release Foldable iPad in 2028, Potentially Run macOS Apps

Apple is planning to release its first foldable tablet in 2028, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Gurman describes it as “sort of like a giant iPad that folds out to the size of two iPad Pros side by side.”

Rumors about Apple's foldable tablet have been swirling for years, but according to Bloomberg, Apple is finally focusing on one product that it will release in a few years.

The report also says that Apple wants to avoid a crease on its device, and that was a big focus during development. The crease is currently barely noticeable, but Apple hasn't eliminated it completely yet:

Prototypes of this new product from Apple's industrial design group have a barely noticeable crease. But it's too early to tell if Apple will be able to get rid of it completely. Samsung Electronics Co., which released its first foldable phone five years ago, tried unsuccessfully to remove the crease.

When unfolded, this display would apparently be around 20 inches or so. Gurman describes it as “a single, continuous piece of glass.” It has also been described as a “higher-end device.

Apple appears to be focusing its foldable strategy on creating much larger screens that will fit in your backpack, rather than offering a suboptimal tablet for your pocket.

Turning to the operating system, Gurman suggests the product will likely run a version of iPadOS. There is one interesting detail here, though:

I don't believe this will be a true iPad-Mac hybrid, but the device will have elements of both. By 2028, iPadOS should be advanced enough to run macOS apps …

It's unclear if this is just Gurman's guess, but the possibility of running Mac apps on this foldable iPad (and possibly other iPads) is pretty exciting!

As for foldable iPhones, the company is exploring the idea, though we may not see it until 2026 at the earliest.
