Apple Shows Off All the Power of Camera Control in New iPhone 16 Video

Apple has released a new video promoting the iPhone 16. While previous ads focused on upcoming Apple Intelligence features, the latest video focuses on camera controls. And if you pay close attention, you'll notice a key detail about Apple's intended use of the new button.

New Ad Shows Off Camera Control's Powers

One of the biggest changes to this year's iPhone is the new multi-function button: Camera Control.

The button provides quick access to the camera, and also supports gestures to change controls in the Apple Camera app.

Apple shows all of this off in its latest iPhone 16 ad.

In any other year, camera control might have been exclusive to the Pro models. But Apple even added it to the base iPhone 16 model.

Camera Control works best in landscape orientation

The first thing I noticed in Apple's ad is that Camera Control only ever appears in landscape orientation.

Which explains a lot.

I've struggled to get as much use out of the feature as I think I should. I take most of my photos in portrait orientation (holding my iPhone vertically). And using Camera Control's advanced features can be challenging — so much so that I've actually stripped it down to a simple shutter button.

The upcoming visual intelligence features in iOS 18.2 will make Camera Control great for vertical use, too. But until then, as Apple's ad suggests, using it horizontally with two hands is the best way to control the camera.
