Apple is acquiring popular photo editing company Pixelmator. The Pixelmator team announced the deal in a blog post on Friday and said there will be “no material changes” to its apps at this time. The deal is pending regulatory approval.
Pixelmator has signed an agreement to be acquired by Apple, subject to regulatory approval. There will be no material changes to Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, or Photomator at this time. Stay tuned for more exciting news.
Pixelmator, a 17-year-old company, says the acquisition by Apple will allow its tools to have an even greater impact on creatives around the world:
We’ve been inspired by Apple since day one, building our products with the same keen focus on design, ease of use, and performance. And looking back, it’s incredible what a small group of dedicated people in Vilnius, Lithuania have accomplished over the years. Now, we’ll have the opportunity to reach an even wider audience and have an even greater impact on the lives of creatives around the world.
Over the years, Pixelmator has become an integral part of the Apple ecosystem with the incredibly popular and powerful Pixelmator Pro and Photomator apps. Over the years, the apps have also added some powerful AI and machine learning features, including background removal tools and super resolution.
For those unfamiliar, Pixelmator Pro is described as “a professional image editing [tool] that anyone can use.” Photomator, meanwhile, is “the best photo editor for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro.”
Apple regularly acquires companies, but it’s rare for acquisitions to be publicly announced in this way. One recent example of such a move is Apple’s acquisition of Dark Sky in 2020. Apple also acquired Workflow in 2017 before launching Shortcuts.
