Apple lays off more than 600 employees after canceling car project

Apple filed the required notice with the state of California this week, confirming plans to permanently lay off more than 600 employees. California law requires employers to notify employees and state officials 60 days before a mass layoff.

The employees listed are located in several buildings occupied by Apple in the Santa Clara, California area, near Apple's Cupertino headquarters. Some of these locations have been rumored to be involved in the development of the Apple Car in the past, so it is likely that these layoffs are related to Apple's decision to stop working on the car project.

Apple has officially stopped developing the car. Apple Car in March. The approximately 2,000 employees who worked on the Apple Car said the project was winding down at the time, and Apple began the process of reassigning some of them to work on artificial intelligence under John Giannandrea and other related departments.

Other employees was given 90 days to apply for open positions within the company, but Apple hired hardware engineers and car designers while working on the Apple Car, and those employees may not have had skills transferable to other projects.

Apple also recently completed development of its own microLED displays, so some layoffs may also be related to the decision to discontinue this work.
