In an effort to improve repairability across its product line, Apple will soon begin selling MacBook Pro speakers as a separate component, something the company hasn't done since the 2015 MacBook Pro model.
According to MacRumors, Apple shared a memo with Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers this week notifying them that separate speakers will be offered as a separate repair for new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M4 chips.
Additionally, another MacRumors source indicates that Apple will expand this repair to older 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models:
According to a reliable source, Apple is now giving technicians access to individual speaker parts forALL 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with Apple Silicon chips, starting with models with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.
Earlier this week, Apple uploaded speaker repair guides to its website, highlighting the complex and tedious process, though the parts are not yet available at a DIY repair store.
Prior to this, replacing the speakers on MacBook Pro models since 2016 required replacing the entire top case, which was a very expensive repair since it involved replacing most of the body of your MacBook. Now that the speakers will be available for individual repair, it should be much more affordable.
There is no word on whether this repair will extend to other Mac models in the future, such as the MacBook Air.
Either way, this is a good step towards more repairable Apple products.
