Apple Is 'Not' Working on a New AirPort, But Apple TV and HomePod Provide a Glimmer of Hope

Joe Rossignol

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman recently reported that Apple is developing its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip that will debut in new Apple TV and HomePod mini models next year. The report raised hopes that Apple could also use the chip to revive its line of AirPort routers, which were discontinued in 2018, but those dreams were dashed by Gurman himself.

In his Power On newsletter today, the influential journalist reported that Apple is “not” currently working on new AirPort routers.

Gurman has given us a glimmer of hope. He said Apple’s internal Wi-Fi chip is “so sophisticated” that it could “theoretically” turn a home device like the upcoming Apple TV or HomePod into a wireless hotspot. However, he didn’t confirm whether Apple would actually follow through with the idea, so hold your hopes for now.

Apple’s internal Wi-Fi chip could have other benefits for the next Apple TV and HomePod mini models, too, including support for Wi-Fi 6E.
