With the announcement of the new iMac earlier today, Apple also released iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 — both featuring the first set of Apple Intelligence tools. But on Monday, the company also confirmed that Apple Intelligence would be coming to iPhone and iPad users in the EU early next year.
iPhone and iPad users in the EU to get Apple Intelligence in April 2025
After announcing Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, the company said its AI features would not be available to users based in the European Union at launch. This is because Apple was concerned about complying with antitrust laws under the Digital Markets Act. However, there is now good news for users in the EU.
On the European version of its website, Apple confirmed that it will launch Apple Intelligence in the EU in April next year. The news coincided with the confirmation that a software update to be released in April will add more languages to Apple Intelligence. The list includes many European languages, including French, German and Italian.
There is one more thing to keep in mind: since EU antitrust law only affects iPhone and iPad, Mac users can already try Apple Intelligence in the EU with macOS 15.1.
“With macOS Sequoia 15.1, Mac users in the EU will be able to access Apple Intelligence in US English. Apple Intelligence features will begin rolling out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU in April,” Apple told the press.
Apple Intelligence currently only works in US English. With iOS 18.2, which is currently in beta, support will be expanded to English from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK. That update is expected to be released in December, the company said.
With iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1, users can use Writing Tools to edit and proofread text, as well as abstract text and notifications. The updates also include Clean Up in the Photos app.
iOS 18.2 and macOS 15.2 will bring even more Apple Intelligence features, including Image Playgrounds, Genmoji, and ChatGPT integration.
It’s worth noting that Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later, or a Mac and iPad with an M1 chip or later. The new iPad mini with the A17 Pro chip also comes with AI features.
