Apple's original film “Take Me to the Moon” bombed at the box office when it hit theaters in July of this year, grossing just $42 million worldwide. In fact, the film’s poor box office performance is considered one of the factors that forced Apple to backtrack on its previous theatrical strategy.
In any case, after an unusually long period of exclusivity on video-on-demand (buy or rent), Apple has finally announced when Moonshot will be available to stream on Apple TV+: It will begin streaming worldwide on December 6.
Moonshot stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in the 1960s-set romantic comedy that follows marketing executive Kelly Jones (Johansson) as she attempts to repair NASA’s public image as hopes for the success of the Apollo mission falter. Jones is tasked with organizing a fake moon landing in case the real mission fails. Tatum co-stars as Cole Davis, the Apollo 11 mission director.
The film received middling reviews from critics, though it was generally well received by audiences who actually went to see it.
With a December 6 release date, the film is set to be Apple's biggest new release of the holiday season.
Coincidentally, Apple's film division also launched two new projects today: the World War II film Blitz and the documentary Bread and Roses premiered today.
