Apple customers sue over unfixed AirPods Pro crackling issue

Julie Clover

This month, a trio of Apple customers filed a class action lawsuit against Apple, accusing the Cupertino company of violating California consumer protection laws and engaging in false advertising by continuing to sell AirPods Pro models that have consistently had issues with crackling or static sounds.

A few months after the AirPods Pro were released in October 2019, customers began complaining about crackling, rattling, popping, and static-like noises coming from the AirPods Pro. The sound seemed to occur when something caused the earbud to move or vibrate, such as when walking or running.

Apple attempted to address the issue with software updates, but the company ultimately launched an AirPods Pro repair program in October 2020. Customers with affected AirPods Pro were able to bring them to Apple for repair or replacement, but unfortunately, many customers found that their replacement AirPods Pro also suffered from the same issue.

As a result, Apple now faces a class action lawsuit in which the plaintiffs are seeking “refunds” due to the defective nature of the AirPods Pro. The complaint states that customers would not have purchased the AirPods Pro if they had not been repaired. or would have paid less if Apple had pointed out the flaw.

Apple is also accused of false advertising for highlighting features like “superior sound quality” and “clear, incredibly clear audio” when it knew there was a problem with crackling and static noise.

The court will have to decide whether the arguments made here have merit and whether the case deserves class action certification.
