Apple confirms iPadOS will get the same EU app changes as iOS this fall

By Julie Clover

Apple today confirmed that it will bring all app ecosystem changes made to iOS in the European Union to iPadOS this fall. Earlier this week, the European Commission said iPadOS is also a controller platform under the Digital Markets Act.

EU developers will be able to distribute iPad apps outside of the App Store using alternative app stores or websites, subject to the same terms and conditions. Core technology fees apply to apps distributed outside of the ‌App Store‌ and have more than one million first-year installs, although there are exceptions for smaller developers, which Apple also announced today.

With the addition of iPadOS, Apple has also confirmed that users installing the same app as on iOS , and on iPadOS, only one first annual installation of this app will be generated over a 12-month period, rather than two, which should help developers stay within the CTF threshold.

As with the iOS changes, there are upcoming changes in iPadOS only affects developers distributing apps in the European Union and ‌iPad‌ users in the EU. There will be no changes for the rest of the world, and applications will continue to be available only in the ‌App Store‌.
