Apple Claims Significant 60% Performance Jump in Safari and WebKit

Apple's WebKit team published a new blog post this week detailing how they've made significant performance updates Safari over the past few months. These improvements follow the debut of Speedometer 3.0 in March, which is described as “a big step forward towards making the Internet faster for everyone.”

Back in March, Apple, Google and Mozilla teamed up to launch a new browser test, Speedometer 3. The goal of Speedometer 3 is to “create a common understanding of Internet performance so improvements can be made to improve the user experience.”

Results. provided by Speedometer 3 provide more details on how the test “captures and calculates scores, shows more detailed results, and introduces an even wider range of workloads.” Apple says:

The introduction of Speedometer 3.0 is a major step forward in making the Internet faster for everyone and enabling web developers to create websites and web applications that were previously impossible.

Apple's WebKit team says it has successfully improved Safari’ Speedometer 3.0 scores increased by approximately 60% from the release of Safari 17.0 in September to the release of Safari 17.4 in March. These improvements, Apple says, mean developers can build websites and web apps faster than ever before:

Thanks to all of these optimizations and dozens of others, we were able to improve the overall Speedometer 3.0 score by approximately 60% between Safari 17.0 and Safari 17.4. Even though individual progressions were often less than 1%, over time they all added up to make a big difference.

Because some of these optimizations also benefited Speedometer 2.1, Safari 17.4 also improved by about 13%. faster. than Safari 17.0 on 2.1 speedometer.
