Apple brings Tap to Pay to iPhone to Italy

Tap to Pay on iPhone launched today in Italy, allowing individual merchants, large retailers and small businesses to use ‌iPhone‌ as a contactless payment terminal.


Retailers can take advantage of the NFC chip in ‌iPhone‌ accept credit and debit card payments, as well as Apple Pay and other digital payment options. Click to pay on ‌iPhone‌ does not require additional hardware and replaces hardware payment systems such as Square Reader.

Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌ available to payment platforms and payment application developers in Italy. Adyen, myPOS, Nexi, Revolut, Stripe, SumUp and Viva support Tap to Pay, while Fabrick, Numia and Sella will also add Tap to Pay integration in the near future. Starting today, click to pay on ‌iPhone‌ can also be used in all Apple retail stores in Italy.

When a customer makes a purchase, a merchant that supports Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌ may accept payment by asking the buyer to bring their credit card, debit card, prepaid card, ‌iPhone‌, Apple Watch or other digital wallet next to the ‌iPhone‌ seller. The transaction is completed via NFC and processing is done using Secure Element for security purposes.

Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌ requires ‌iPhone‌ XS or newer and requires a contactless card or device. Contactless cards from American Express, Global Discover Network, Diners, Mastercard and Visa will work.

Italy is the 11th country to offer Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌ available. Previously, Apple implemented this feature in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, Brazil, France, Taiwan and Ukraine.
