Several new iPhone SE 4 mockup images were published today by Japanese Apple blog Macotakara, showing a form factor similar to the iPhone 14, as we expected. The blog also highlights compatibility with existing iPhone 14 cases and a purported larger size option – which is unlikely to come to fruition.
iPhone SE 4 Dummys
Macotakara regularly shares mockups of upcoming iPhone models, and they often provide some insight into what to expect from future iPhones. This year, things are different, and the mockups essentially match all the previous rumors.
The dummies have a single rear camera, a mute switch in place of the action button, and a smaller cutout with Face ID at the top.
The dimensions of the dummies are 146.7 mm x 71.5 mm x 7.8 mm, which is identical to the existing iPhone 14. According to the blog, the soft TPU cases for the iPhone 14 fit just fine, although the cutout for the camera is too big since the iPhone 14 had a dual camera, compared to the single camera of the upcoming iPhone SE 4.
They also note that the mute switch appears to be slightly smaller than the iPhone 14's, although the volume buttons and side button are roughly the same.
Larger size option: Unlikely
According to the blog, there also appears to be a larger variant, with the same dimensions as the iPhone 14 Plus (which they incorrectly call 6.5-inch, it’s actually 6.7-inch).
It’s unlikely that this will actually come to anything, given the fact that there have been no previous reports of a larger size being possible for the upcoming iPhone SE 4. While it would be an interesting move, it’s something that has long been speculated to be happening – and it’s probably not going to happen.
Macotakara claims that the “final exact design and size expansion” hasn’t been decided yet, and that there’s a “chance” that there will only be one size.
I’d say it’s more likely that there will only be one size. Generally speaking, new Apple products that have never been rumored to be released are not something that arrives this late in development, and if a larger iPhone SE 4 were on the way, it’s highly unlikely that we would only be learning about it now for the first time.
The larger iPhone SE 4 certainly won't be launching this spring, though there's always the rare chance it'll launch much later than the smaller model.
Wrapping Up
Whether we get a larger variant or not, the iPhone SE 4 is expected to launch next spring with a 6.1-inch OLED display, an A18 chip with Apple Intelligence, and a single rear camera system using the same 48MP sensor as the iPhone 15. Apple's first-ever 5G modem is also expected to debut.
