Apple has dabbled in audio transcription in the past with varying degrees of success. One prominent example recently has been the Apple Podcasts transcripts; On a more pessimistic note, voicemail transcripts are still at a low level. But according to a new report, the upcoming release of iOS 18 will usher in a host of new system-wide audio transcription and summary features, all powered by artificial intelligence.
Using AI for voice memos and notes

People familiar with the matter told us that Apple is working on AI-based generalization and significantly improved audio transcription for several of its next-generation operating systems. The new features are expected to significantly improve the productivity of users of the core Notes, Voice Memos, and other apps.
It looks like these features will be one of the most compelling arguments for AI integration. into various parts of Apple's operating systems.
Transcription of audio content and the ability to get summaries of that content using artificial intelligence are two very practical features that can save users a lot of time.
If everything works well , students will be able to record lectures and quickly and easily refer back to key information through a transcript. Recorded business meetings can be summarized as a useful reminder of what was discussed.
If these things are implemented with real intelligence, they can greatly improve the lives of users. These examples are of course great for the iPhone, but I also think they make a good case for the AI capabilities of the iPad Pro M4.

Notes and Voice Memos seem like two ideal apps for integrating these features, but I'm curious to see where else they are. I wish there was a Shazam-style button in Control Center that listens to your surroundings and automatically transcribes what it hears—all in the background, with minimal power consumption. Perhaps it could even be related to shortcuts in some way. There are so many possibilities.
